Welwyn Garden City is special.  As well as being the second of only two garden cities founded in Hertfordshire by Sir Ebenezer Howard, it is the only garden city to become a New Town after the Second World War.  Because of this many people have written about the garden city and several books containing historic photographs have been published.   The other reason that Welwyn Garden City is so special is that the generations of people who have lived here over the centuries have left behind a wonderful legacy of archives and other documents, many of which are now held by Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS) at County Hall in Hertford.   The survival of these records makes searching out the history of houses in the garden city very easy, and the amount of information to be discovered is amazing.  However because there is so much, the following paragraphs will guide you through the main sources and give you hints and tips for doing research for yourself.
