Walnut Grove

Real walnuts in Hatfield Hyde

By Roger Filler

Many of the roads in Welwyn Garden City are named after old farms, field names and local places. Wendy Rathbone, who was born in WGC remembers her father, Stanley Hunt, telling her stories of his school days. He was born in Hatfield Hyde and must have gone to the village school in Homestead Lane.

The stains had come from him “scrumping” walnuts, as walked through the grove on the way to school

He was often disciplined by his teacher for smoking, for on inspection, his fingers were often stained brown. Unfortunately, he couldn’t tell his teacher the stains had come from him “scrumping” walnuts, as walked through the grove on the way to school – remembered now by the road Walnut Grove.
