The Olympians

Olympics past and future

By Jennifer McCann

With the 2012 London Olympics approaching it is perhaps time to recall the success of Welwyn Garden citizen Dennis Carnill.  He was a member of the England Hockey Team who played at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 and came away victorious with the Bronze Medal.  He was also a member of the British Hockey team which competed at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 where they narrowly missed the medals table.

Dennis was the son of Mr R J Carnill, who for many years ran a Haberdashery and Drapers at 42 Howardsgate.  Mr Carnill senior was a wicket keeper for the Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club.

They both became Honorary Life Members of the Blueharts Hockey Club.
