All our Yesterdays

Handside School Consortium Project

By Llinos Thomas

In November 2008 pupils from Applecroft, Lakeside and Stanborough Schools worked with a local artist Vanessa Godfrey to produce a display of artwork. The children were inspired by drawings, maps and archive material held at Welwyn Garden City Library, Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies and Mill Green Museum. Their work was displayed at the local history event, All Our Yesterdays: Memories of Welwyn and the Garden City, held on Saturday November 22nd at Welwyn Garden City Library.

The pupils investigated housing in the Handside area and produced:-

  • A college map showing the Handside area in the past
  • A digital overlay map showing the development of Welwyn Garden City area from 1921-1982
  • Posters to advertise Welwyn Garden City and the Handside area, based on early advertising.
  • Digital slide show of houses, buildings and architecture in Welwyn Garden City

  • Wrong hyperlink for Stanborough School, it gets you to the Watford one – I went to the Welwyn Stanborough, of which no one would have tried to use that line “God is the master of our school”. . . I love the digital overlay map, quite a few surprises there relating to the age of some neighbourhoods.

Editor Comments: Thanks for pointing out the Stanborough School link error, now corrected.
