Theatre's narrow escape, interior in flames
Article in the Welwyn Times, Thursday September 26th, 1929
The Welwyn theatre had a narrow escape from complete destruction by fire in the early hours of this morning.
As Mr F.J.Osborn was coming from the station at about 12.40am, he noticed smoke coming from the building and gave the alarm. The old Fire Brigade turned out under Captain James. Captain James took the hose from the side of the Theatre, and forcing entry, found ninety seats and the floor ablaze.
The flames were subdued in about twenty minutes, but the seats affected were completely burnt out, the paint was blistered, and the ceiling cracked with the intense heat.
The new engine was taken out but was not used.
The performance will take place tonight as usual.
