1928 Summer Fete in Welwyn Garden City

A local fete held on August Bank Holiday in 1928

By Robert Gill

A summer fete in Welwyn Garden City.

A record of a local fete held on a sunny August bank holiday in Welwyn Garden City in 1928.

A festival badge seller holds an umbrella, posing and smiling for the camera. Elsewhere, children of all ages enjoy the sideshow rides, which include a merry-go-round, super-slide and giant swings. A trio of women stand underneath an umbrella, emerging simultaneously eating ice creams, whilst another woman laughs as she struggles to eat her messy ice cream.

A lively highland dancing demonstration is followed by men and boys competing on various sideshow games, whilst younger children sit and watch a Punch & Judy show. Later, the crowds gather for the ankle and smiling contests, with the latter won by Miss Diana Colbeck. The film concludes with a man and boy climbing into an Avro 548 bi-plane (G-EBWJ) and departing for an aerial joyride.
