Panshanger Airfield

Panshanger Airfield
Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies

Whilst sorting through the photo collection at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies I came across this photo.

There is no date on it and no title just that it is Panshanger Airfield.

I would love to know why it was taken and when.

  • The picture is of the last Mosquito built at Hatfield and is definitely taken at de Havillands, Hatfield.

  • Panshanger was made to look like De Haviland’s Aircraft factory in the 2nd world war to confuse the germans so the photo could be Panshanger. A couple of years ago a book was published about Panshanger with photos, contact the airfield for more info.

  • I would have said that photo was taken at Salisbury Hall, birthplace of the Mosquito. However, it could possibly be Panshanger. The largest hangar building wasn’t constructed until 1960 and would therefore not have been extant in the 40s.

  • After some research, I believe that the picture was taken at De Havillands’, Hatfield in front of the original flight hangers and not Panshanger. Certainly, the hangers are not the same as the one at Panshanger though there is some similarity. The aircraft is definitely a Mosquito and could be the prototype W4050 but the occasion is still a mystery.
