The Howard Centre rises

Sitting in Howardsgate
By Roger Filler

It’s November 1988 and these Garden Citizens ponder what is going to rise from behind the hoardings on the old railway station site at the end of Howardsgate. They would have to wait until 1990 when the new Howard Centre opened for business, along with the new railway station. Buses were still running from the old bus station and the gentleman on the right carries a John Lewis carrier bag – the department store chain had taken over Welwyn Department Stores four years earlier.
