The Panshanger Estate in 1910:   100 years after the first survey, Countess Cowper (widow of the 7th and last Earl Cowper), ordered a new survey of her estates.  The plan shown here is of Upper Handside and includes the old cottages which still survive in this area.  The schedule gives not only the names of the tenants but also their ages, whether they were healthy and had a job.  Cottage number one is inhabited by Walter Welch, aged 66 on the sick list and Fred Nash a platelayer on the Great Northern Railway.
