Sir Basil Blackett: Inauguration of the Welwyn Chamber of Commerce 1929
Speech given by Sir Basil Blackett KCB KCSI
July 6th 1929
“…Welwyn Garden City is a refreshing proof of our ability, in spite of all the difficulties, to get things done in the England of today. It is also a striking tribute to the value of general staff work and the advantage of thinking out plans in advance and in a unified direction. It is a new experiment in the combination of private enterprise with public service…
“One of the most important and virile communities in the Home Counties”
Less than ten years ago this area of four square miles was purely agricultural. Though only twenty miles from London, it was sparsely inhabited and difficult of access. Today we look around us upon a flourishing and rapidly growing city, provided with all the services demanded by modern civilisation, one of the most important and virile communities in the Home Counties.”
Sir Basil Blackett, KCB, KCSI
