Poetic Memories
Karon's Home Town Poem
Growing up in Welwyn Garden City
The “rag and bone man” and trusty old horse
Still (!) does his round – with a truck now of course!
The local ‘NK’ reg on cars & vans,
Express dairies – with Frank the milkman.
“20th mile” bridge – on the way to town
Tewin Road bridge that got pulled down.
Nabisco factory for ‘famed’ Shredded Wheat,
The Cherry Tree Pub for something to eat.
The fair on Chequers and Stanborough Lakes
Fireworks & boating – all the fun we could take!
The fountain, the station and taxi rank,
KFC for it’s trade – had the ‘bikers’ to thank!
Hear of the ‘carnival’ in our Welwyn Times
The Howard School fetes were one of a kind!
Football and ‘hanging’ in George V fields
On second hand bikes with buckled wheels!
Christmas down “Woodhall” round its own Xmas tree,
Getting cold, singing carols, with my family.
Welwyn Garden City for me in my youth
Holds great memories, now I’m long in the tooth!
