Council house sell-off

6,000 homes for sale

On gaining control of the council in 1976, and in line with a national directive, the Conservatives announced they would be offering council homes for sale, and around 6,000 homes in the district were offered to long-term residents and many took the opportunity to buy their own home at knock-down prices.
