In November 2008 pupils from Applecroft, Lakeside and Stanborough Schools worked with a local artist, Vanessa Godfrey, to produce a digital map showing the growth of Welwyn Garden City between 1921-1982. They also produced drawings of the Handside areas

The children were inspired by drawings, maps and archive material held at Welwyn Garden City Library, Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies and Mill Green Museum. Their work was displayed at the local history event, All Our Yesterdays: Memories of Welwyn and the Garden City, held on Saturday November 22nd at Welwyn Garden City Library.

The digital slide show of the development of Welwyn Garden City can be seen by opening the attached document.

  • Handside House

Where exactly is this particular house? Can you supply the number and Street name please?
I lived in Handside lane from 1946 and cannot remember a ‘Handside House’ !!

To me it looks suspiciously like the pair of semi-detached houses which are 61 and 63 Handside Lane.
As I child I lived in no. 61, on the left hand side.
