Gosling Stadium

Building the stadium & original Hut

By Jyll Marsh

I can remeber travelling to the stadium of a Saturday with my Dad to help build the original wooden clubhouse. We would either get the 330a or Dad would tow my cycle trailer behind his bicycle which can’t have been easy. Both my parents were keen cyclists & members of the Welwyn Wheelers & this stadium meant a great deal to them and their fellow club members & friends.

I was about 5 or 6 at the time & I am proud to say I knocked in some of the nails in that old hut. It provided facilities to change, toilets, a bar & refreshment area, meeting space & somewhere to shelter from the rain. My mother & other ladies used to create refreshments for the competitors if they weren’t racing themselves. It was in use for many years until the posher brick built clubhouse & squash courts were built.

We attended cycle races reguarly at the weekends throughout the 1960’s & my sisters & I even got to be announcers as we got older.
