By Susan Hall
This wedding appeared in the Welwyn Times of 20 January 1938 on page 1, along with the following article:
“Many Garden City and Welwyn friends were present on Saturday when the wedding took place at St James’ Church, Piccadilly, between John Campbell White and Rachel Gray. The bridegoom is the son of Mr and Mrs White, “Upway,” Wewyn, and the bride is the second daughter of Dr. L. T. M. Gray and Mrs Gray, of Welwyn Garden City and “Bellus,” Welwyn.
The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of pale duck-egg blue fine wool with black wool boucle coat striped pale blue and black, with inside facings and military collar. Her hat was a black fine felt with ostrich breast feather mount to match the dress.
After the ceremony, at which Mr Hugh Lindsay acted as best man, there was a reception at the Blue Restaurant, Jermyn Street, and the couple left for a honeymmon on the Riviera. The bride’s going away suit was rust coloured with small brown felt hat.”
