“One of the Garden City’s most popular weddings took place at the Free Church on Saturday, when the bride was Miss Kathleen Pinner, youngest daughter of labour councillors, Mr E D Pinner, J.P., and Mrs Pinner, of 45 Elm Gardens, and the bridegroom was Mr John Palmer, son of Mr Frederick Palmer, the building contractor, and Mrs Palmer, of 95 Guessens Road.

Very becomingly the bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in an ankle length dress of white georgette and white satin shoes. Her veil, lent by her cousin, was trimmed with pearls and orange blossom. She wore a long string of pearls. A shower bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums which she carried completed a graceful picture.

Miss Maisie Wells, cousin of the bride, and Miss Georgina Truscott, a cousin of the bridegroom, acted as bridesmaids, Master Dudley Pearson Mainprize, friend of the bride, as page. The ladies wore becoming apricot coloured ankle length dresses of georgette, with coatees and shoes to match, net caps trimmed with flowers, and strings of pearls presented by the bridegroom. They carried bouquets of bronze chrysanthemums.

A white satin cushion for the bride to kneel upon was carried by the page, who was handsomely attired in long peach velvet trousers with white satin blouse and black patent shoes with silver buckles.

Mr Donald MacBeath, friend of the bridegroom, acted as best man, and the ceremony was performed by  the Rev. R E Fenn. At the organ Mrs C S Pakes played “Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven,” ” O Perfect Love,” and “The Wedding March.”

At the doors of the church the couple had to fight their way through a veritable storm of confetti, under an arch formed by the bridegroom’s fellow members of the Fire Brigade and the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Following a reception at the Alpha School, attended by about 70 guests, the happy pair left for their honeymoon at Bournmouth, the bride’s travelling dress being a two piece red flec tweed suit, trimmed with fur.

Presents to the number of 63 were received. A fitted picnic case was given by the empolyees of Mr F. Palmer, a cut glass jug by the Fire Brigade, and an electric toaster by the St. John Ambulance Brigade. A 400 day enclosed clock was given by the bride’s parents, while from the bridegroom’s parents was received a canteen of cutlery and carving set, and dinner service. The bride’s gift to the bridegroom consisted of a pair of binoculars in case, and the bridegroom’s  gift to the bride was a needlework basket.

The couple are to reside at 47 Attimore Road.”
