Sally Haddon's (nee Ellett) memories of being evacuated to Welwyn Garden City

Sally Haddon

The Train Girls

My maiden name was  Sally Ellett. My married name is Sally Haddon. I was born 07.07.1937 and I went to Parkway School and then went to the Grammar School for girls in Hitchin. I lived at number 6, Parkway.

Our family went there after the house in Hackney had been bombed. My grandparents, an aunt, my mother and father and I were all living in the house with Mr Hughes, the tenant. Quite a squash! I think that Mr. Hughes liked my grandmother’s cooking and we all lived together until Mr Hughes moved away.

A group, calling themselves “The Train Girls” still meet up once a year. Gillian Smith, Susan Jones and Audrey Frater and I all enjoy our chats about life as it was in WGC during and just after the war years.

It would be good to have a small tea party for elderly ladies in the area.

  • In the mid-1940s I was 6-year-old Isabel (not a name I liked, especially when some clever clogs started the “Is a bell necessary on a bicycle?” routine. The Elletts, Sally aged 9 and her parents, Uncle Jack and Auntie Phyll were very kind and a lot of fun and I loved being invited to stay with them with my mum and baby brother Jim. The two sets of parents had been friends back in East London and we were now in Walthamstow. For us, WGC was real countryside. All the memories were wonderful. I’d love to receive any news of the Ellett Family.
