The Coronation Fountain
Pink for a month

To mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a fountain was erected in Parkway at the intersection with Howardsgate in 1953. The fountain was designed by Kenneth Peacock who was a partner of Louis de Soissons.
The fountain often suffers through the introduction of soap powder creating clouds of foam which then requires an expensive clean out.
However, in recent years throughout October, the fountain has been given pink water. This is provided by Roche in recognition of Breast Cancer month.

My mum worked in the opticians on Howardsgate for about 25 years and I remember seeing the fountain when you went through the dark station building with Woolies on your right and Wimpy on your left. The fountain was opened one Sunday and attracted quite a crowd so some of the shops even opened that day to get some more business. Even when we moved back to Panshanger in 1981 the fountain looks as great as what it did back then.
