Mary Hall: Memories of 1950’s Welwyn Garden City

By Mary Hall

My name was Mary Hall. I lived at number 7 Mill Green Road, Welwyn Garden City.

My mother died of TB aged 31 when I was was 3.

I was born in Peartree Maternity Hospital. Superseded by The QE11 hospital which I have been told is now only a treatment center. How things change.

The house I was brought up in was demolished when I was about 25. I see from Google earth that a very nice bench sits close by to the spot.

I attended Our Lady’s Catholic Primary school I think from 1950-1956 (approx). Memory’s not great these days. I then went onto The Convent School on Parkway. Not my finest hour sadly. Left with no great knowledge of anything and no exams to my name.

I would like to hear from anyone who has recollections of Mill Green Road, or the Convent or the lovely Welwyn Department store where I had my first Knicker Bocker Glory in the lovely restaurant. Or the lovely dress shop on the ground floor called where I saved up and bought my first pencil slim skirt for work at Murphy Radio.

  • Hello Mary,
I remember you from when I lived at 9 Millgreen Road with my Dad, Mum and brother. I moved from Welwyn when I was 16, to Derby to take up an apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce.
I married in 1970, and am still married to the same lovely lady! We have lived in a number of different places, including France for eleven years.
My Dad dies in 1971, and my Mum in 2001. She had moved from Millgreen Road when the area was re-developed, and lived out her last years in an old people’s home in Knebworth.
I now live in Herefordshire, in the town where Pat, my wife, was born and brought up. Life is fairly peaceful and enjoyable; I hope yours is too.
    Best regards. Jim Scott
