Upper Handside farm
By Susan Flood
In 1810 the 5th Earl Cowper ordered that a survey be made of the whole of his estate. The result is contained in a volume containing very fine individual plans. This one shows Upper Handside Farm, now part of the garden city. The tenant is Edmund Fernly and all his fields are listed together with their names and acreages. The older cottages that still exist today are coloured red on the left of the plan.
