Mary Perren and Phoebe Johnson were a part of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Welwyn Garden City, which was founded in 1938. It was a club in which aspiring young women gathered for rather professional meetings and discussions for an hour and a half at a time. Members were invited and asked to dress smart and act formal. Some meetings were held at Homestead Court and they even debated with men of the round table on matters such as equality of sexes, women working and child care arrangements.
